To Trust as a Child

Nothing in the world can bring a smile to someone like a little child. Children have the ability to not only disarm, but capture hearts. Their innocence, humility and trust is the very thing that invites you into their world. They have not had time in their short lives to build walls of protection around them to keep people at arms-length, or walls that imprison, preventing them from having vulnerable relationships with others.

Learn this well: Unless you dramatically change your way of thinking and become teachable, and learn about heaven’s kingdom realm with the wide-eyed wonder of a child, you will never be able to enter in. Whoever continually humbles himself to become like this gentle child is the greatest one in heaven’s kingdom realm. Matt 18:3 TPT

Children, by nature, are teachable. They are like little sponges that believe what they hear and take what you say at face value. This characteristic is so important that Jesus tells us that we must become teachable. As we develop into adults, the battle within our heart has a tendency to become independent and self-willed. The world sees this as admirable but God knows the destruction it does to our souls. For it breeds pride, stubbornness and rebellion.

Jesus overheard them and said, “I want little children to come to me, so never interfere with them when they want to come, for heaven’s kingdom realm is composed of beloved ones like these! Listen to this truth: No one will enter the kingdom realm of heaven unless he becomes like one of these!” Matt 19:14

When we are children, we are dependent on the adults in our lives. As we grow, we are to transfer the dependence that is on our natural parents to our heavenly Father, for we will never cease being His children. Regardless of our age, we are never too old to rely on Him, but we will have to train ourselves to do it, for it won’t come naturally. It is very comforting to know that He will always take care of us, as we trust in and lean on Him. May this be the cry of our heart just like it was King David’s when he wrote the following:

Psalm 131 Lord, my heart is meek before you. I don’t consider myself better than others. I’m content to not pursue matters that are over my head—such as your complex mysteries and wonders—that I’m not yet ready to understand. I am humbled and quieted in your presence. Like a contented child who rests on its mother’s lap, I’m your resting child and my soul is content in you. O people of God your time has come to quietly trust, waiting upon the Lord now and forever.
